Amid the gathering darkness

Amid the gathering darkness -

Deepening steadily

As the chill intensifies –

The last few rays

Battle for supremacy

Knowing they must,

For now, surrender.

Soon even shadows

Will be lost

And vision absent

Amid the confusing vista

Of cavernous night.

Any yet -

As surely as the dark

With all its myriad sensations

Will blanket us for a time -

The dawn will yet come

And Light and Life

Eternally

Defeat the night
