"All of us who identify as people of faith - whatever faith group we belong to - encounter a system within society that tries to make us belong to the secular world on its own terms; there are practices and rituals of belonging, that show up when we try to affirm religious values that put us at odds with the assumptions of this narrative. Our temples and sacrifices and priests may be other than those met by Mary and Joseph when they took the infant to the ritual of purification and dedication; but we still have them, and they are just as pervasive and just as life-shaping.'
